ʻAleʻa Choral Series · Aloha Keauhou by Kenneth Makuakāne and Keola Donaghy

Kenneth Makuakāne and Keola Donaghy composed "Aloha Keauhou" to honor Princess Pauahi for the 125th anniversary of Kamehameha Schools in 2013. Inspired by a 2012 visit to the Keauhou ahupuaʻa in Kaʻu, the song highlights the contrast between human stewardship and the pristine beauty of the untouched Kīlauea forest. Through imagery of the vigilant ʻio (hawk) and the ʻelepaio (flycatcher), the piece cautions that the land's splendor (and by extension all of Pauahi's gifts) must be actively guarded or it may be lost, a concept encapsulated in the phrase "hala auaneʻi ka Puʻulena". The work asserts that the vitality of Keauhou is sustained by divine providence and the enduring legacy of the aliʻi.
