Child' is a short composition that combines sorrow and hope. It serves as a reminder to our children that, despite the fear of the unknown and the absence of a strong support system, they are not alone. It guides them in their quest to discover themselves, their beliefs, and how to treat others with respect and kindness.

Whether performed at a slow or fast pace, 'Child' is your moment. I urge you to immerse yourself in the repeated sections, infusing them with your voices, ideas, emotions, and stories. This is your opportunity to make 'Child' a reflection of your personal journey.

'Child' was commissioned in memory of Sheree Lynn Mathews (April 15, 1956 - May 18, 1974) for my choir, Un/Heard. We deliberately kept the repetitions minimal, allowing the piece to speak for itself. Now, it's your turn to build upon it, to connect with those around you, and to let them know that you are there for them.

I wrote this text and music to offer a message that connected with our present while being able to be a reflective prayer to speak to those in our past; their voices go with us because they taught us much with their presence and actions. We are all part of this larger narrative that will continue to show up for kindness.
