About the Score

Ecstatic Expectancy, commissioned by Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Seattle in 2022, is a celebration of the "O Antiphons," taken from the eighth century hymn O Come Emmanuel sung during the Christian season of Advent. It was composed by improvisationally singing short melodic fragments for each description of Emmanuel: Wisdom from on High... Lord of Might... Branch of Jesse's tree... Key of David... Day Spring... Desire of Nations." By adding a complex meter, finger cymbals, and an improvised hi-hat solo, this piece is full of the joyful anticipation of Christmas.
