About the Score

ʻAleʻa Choral Series · Liko Pua Lehua arr by Haruna Sato

Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838-1917) composed "Liko Pua Lehua" in 1867 under the title "Thou E Ka Nani Mae ʻOle" with her sister Princess Likelike, later revised with the new title alongside Kapoli. Of particular interest in this work is her use of English imagery and symbolism specifically with the weeping willow, dahlia, canary, and dale. Many scholars believe that these were intentionally used to reference those in her circle who were non-Hawaiian, but we can never know for sure; that is part of the beauty of Hawaiian poetry is the use of kaona, or multiple and hidden meanings.

Featured on the Ale Choral ICON Series.
