About the Score

“Oh, Earth” was the winner of the 2025 Gregg Smith Choral Composition Contest. Based on the poem “June Night” by Sara Teasdale, the piece blends flowing melodic lines sung on open vowels with lines of the poetry, all coupled with intricate piano accompaniment. Choral works are often thought of as separate from the rest of the musical world; this piece aims to blur the lines between instrumental and choral music. Throughout the piece, all four parts, (SSAA,) contribute to the construction of a recognizable motif, out of which emerges Teasdale’s beautiful text. The fast-moving melodic lines are later contrasted with long and powerful chords, sung simply on the titular words, “oh earth,” during the climax of the piece, which quickly recede back into the safety of the poetry and melodic lines with which we have become familiar. The world premiere of "Oh, Earth" was performed on March 22, 2026 by Syracuse University's Crouse Chorale under the direction of Dr. Kyra Stahr.
