About the Score

Originating in 1912, Ragtime Cowboy Joe is an unfortunately lesser-known early American folk/cowboy song. Lyricist Maurice Abrahams reportedly wrote the song when his nephew, Joe Abrahas, appeared in his Brooklyn apartment adorned in a cowboy outfit. The song became a number-one hit for singer Bob Roberts, and also the second best-selling record of 1912. This setting seeks to emulate an easy-riding cowboy style in it’s original stanza, with a standard fiddle obbligato, and then proceeds with a rhythmically vital repeat of the text, opening with a tip of the ten-gallon hat to Copland’s Rodeo.
